A terrace can have lovely proportions at the front and a surprisingly dark centre. Extending the rear may create a bright new kitchen, while leaving the room behind it even further from a window. The challenge is to improve the whole sequence of spaces.
Walk through the house at different times of day. Note which rooms need artificial light, where views are blocked and which spaces feel comfortable already. Orientation, neighbouring buildings and the depth of the plan all affect the options.
Before adding floor area, test whether moving a doorway, opening a sightline or rearranging the kitchen could help daylight reach further into the home.
A rooflight close to the junction of old and new can bring light to the part of the plan furthest from the garden. Its position needs to work with roof structure, kitchen units and the activities below. Think about cleaning, opening controls and how the light will feel throughout the day.
A glimpse of the garden can make a hallway feel more welcoming. Glazed internal doors or carefully positioned openings may share light while retaining useful separation. Fully open plan is one option, but acoustics, privacy, heating and fire safety also need attention.
In our Brislington Extension, the dual-aspect kitchen diner helps daylight reach the hallway. Windows, sliding doors and rooflights work together rather than relying on one oversized opening.
More glazing can also mean more solar gain and glare. Consider orientation, external shading, glass specification and ventilation as part of the same design. A rooflight that looks generous on plan should still feel comfortable on a hot afternoon.
Window reveals, ceilings and internal finishes influence how a space feels. A balanced palette of lighter surfaces and warmer materials can make the most of available light without making every room white. The aim is a home with variety, depth and useful light where you need it.
